The coin consists of 3 components: an outer ring, an inner copper-nickel alloy disc and a red light-conducting polymer ring.

In the center of the reverse there is a parrot diving on a flower, five more birds fluttering nearby. The obverse of the coin depicts a German eagle, year of issue, denomination, country name and 12 stars of the European Union.

Each yard has its own shade of red polymer ring.
