The Unicorn commemorative coin is the first of a series called “Mythological Heroes and Creatures,” intended to celebrate universal symbols that connect all generations. Today we think of him as a friendly white horse with a harmless horn and a rainbow-colored mane. The unicorn represents goodness, purity and the ability to dream.
In European literature and art, the unicorn has been depicted for the last thousand years or so as a horse, often white in color, with a long straight horn with spiral grooves, cloven hooves, and sometimes a goat’s beard. During the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, it was commonly described as an extremely wild forest creature, a symbol of purity and grace. Medieval bestiaries say that its horn has the ability to make poisoned water drinkable, and the unicorn can also cure diseases.
