The nearly 3,500-year-old tomb of King Tutankhamun was discovered by British archaeologist Howard Carter in Egypt’s Valley of the Kings in 1922, causing worldwide sensation. Resting on the mummified remains of the young pharaoh was an ornate death mask, elaborately crafted from gold, a lustrous precious metal that the ancient Egyptians believed to be the skin of the gods. Along with the king’s mummified body, his fabulous golden treasures remained remarkably intact.
