To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Beatrix Potter, the famous children’s book writer, the Royal Mint in 2016 began issuing commemorative 50p coins dedicated to the heroes of Beatrix Potter’s fairy tales. They were all designed by Emma Noble.
The Tale of the Squirrel Natkin tells the story of a ginger squirrel named Natkin and his escape from an owl named Old Brown. The story was published in August 1903. The British fifty pence coin is a seven-sided coin formed as an equilateral-curve heptagon. This shape, which was revolutionary at the time.
Obverse depicts Natkin the squirrel fleeing Old Brown’s owl. The reverse features a new portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clarke.
