The Declaration of the United Nations General Assembly declared 2022 the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture. Recognition of artisanal fisheries and aquaculture is intended to highlight the global contribution of fishers and fish farmers, who produce most of the food consumed. The Declaration also draws media attention to our food systems, supplies, livelihoods, culture and environment. For a country like Greece, its history is very closely connected with the extraction of seafood for literally over 5,000 years. The ancient Greeks were known as seafarers and shipbuilders, and also traveled far and wide in search of a variety of fish. Today, the contribution of small-scale fisheries is much greater, the catches not only meet the demand within the country, but also collectively. Last year, Greek fishermen managed to export over 200,000 tons of fish products, earning nearly a billion dollars in revenue.
