Hasselt is the capital of Belgian gin, first mentioned in 1165. The city was part of the County of Loon, then the Prince-Bishopric of Liège and is today the capital of the province of Limburg. Thanks to its advantageous position on trade routes and its proximity to the Albert Canal, Hasselt has maintained its prosperity.
