The Government of Guatemala has issued a commemorative 1 quetzal banknote to mark the centenary of the introduction of the quetzal currency (1924-2024).
The obverse features a portrait of General José María Orellana, President of Guatemala from 1921 to 1926, during whose reign the national currency was introduced. Also featured is the Tikal Temple, one of the symbols of the ancient Mayan civilization. The composition features the silhouette of the quetzal bird, the country’s national bird and a symbol of freedom and national identity.
The reverse side emphasizes the idea of “a century next to the nation” and includes inscriptions related to the history of the currency and state symbols.
