The Madara Horseman is carved into a sandstone rock 23 meters above the ground near the former capital of Bulgaria, Pliska. Under the rider is a lion killed by him. The rock relief dates from the early 8th century and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is depicted on all the coins of Bulgaria. Leva’s coins feature portraits of the historian Paisius of Hilendar (1722–1773) and the founder of the monastery, St. John of Rila (c. 876–946). This is the first set of coins of the fourth Bulgarian lev, issued in 1999.
