Bernardo O’Higgins (1778–1842)

led Chile to independence from the Spanish

colonial rule as captain-general

and later became head of state.

Today, he is revered as a national hero and founding father.

On the obverses of coins in denominations from 1 to 50 pesos

This set depicts his portrait.

On bimetallic coins of 100 and 500 pesos

depicts a woman in traditional Mapuche dress and

portrait of the Archbishop of Santiago de Chile Raul Silva Henriquez.

The reverse features denominations, laurel branches and the national coat of arms.

Coins of 1 and 5 pesos are seven-sided and

no longer minted as of 2017.

The 50 peso coin is 10-sided.
