The coin was issued to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the modern railway and the momentous journey that changed the world.

The Stockton and Darlington Railway was the world’s first public steam railway. Built in northeast England between the towns of Stockton-on-Tees and Darlington, the Stockton and Darlington Railway was 40 km long. The official opening took place on September 27, 1825. The first locomotive to operate the line was George Stephenson’s Locomotion No. 1, depicted on a coin. It carried approximately 600 passengers, covering the first 19 km of the route in two hours.

The coin is presented in specially designed packaging that reflects the enormous impact the railway has had on people’s lives since 1825.
