In 2004, Hamid Karzai became the first

democratically elected head of state in Afghanistan’s history.

Before the big election

The Islamic Republic of Afghanistan was established.

This is the complete and only set of state coins.

before the Taliban came back to power in 2021.

Coins have been minted since 2004,

but were first released in 2005.

The reverse shows the name of the country and the denomination,

the obverse depicts the national coat of arms of the time.

Each coin is made from a different material.
