Coins from Bhutan – “Earth of the

Thunder Dragon”

Buddhism is of great importance not only in everyday

life of the Bhutanese, but is also part of the historical

heritage of the country. Coins of this set Ngultrum

contain important symbols of the state religion. It is the

first set of coins with new subunit spelling

“Chertums”. The obverse depicts a shankha (a shell that emits the sound of awakening), a pair of

goldfish (symbol of auspiciousness) and

Dharmachakra (wheel of teaching) on a lotus flower

(symbol of pristine purity). The reverse depicts

eight Buddhism good luck symbols and part

national emblem – double vajra (symbol

harmony between religious and secular authorities).
