Although Djibouti has the smallest population on the African continent, the country is of great economic importance. Due to its location on one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes, the Bab el Mandeb, seafaring has a long tradition. The Port of Djibouti is the most important import and export center of its large neighbor Ethiopia. The two reverses of this complete set of Djiboutian franc coins depict a dhow (sailboat), an ocean liner and the port of Djibouti. Others feature ostrich-feathered Nile lehwe, camels, laurel branches, and the endemic Djiboutian spur. The state emblem is depicted on all obverses. Interestingly, the smallest denomination has the largest diameter.
– Rare animal motifs
– Ships in the port of Djibouti
