In 1991, the Eritrean War of Independence ended, and after a referendum in 1993, the country finally gained independence from Ethiopia. The currency of Eritrea, the nakfa, is named after the city that played a decisive role in the war. This is a complete first set of Nakfa coins. It consists of denominations of the cent subunit. Interestingly, the highest denomination is also the 100 cent coin, not the 1 nakfa. The obverses of the coins depict a red-fronted gazelle, a leopard, a North African ostrich, Grevy’s zebra, a large kudu and an African elephant with a cub. All reverses feature soldiers raising the national flag and the commemorative year 1991.
– Native wildlife motifs
– Unusual denomination of 100 cents
– Commemoration of the end of the War of Independence
