Jomo Kenyatta’s reputation has gone beyond Kenya
and he was awarded the honorary title of Mzi,
which means “great old man”.
He studied in London and also in Moscow
and played an important role in gaining Kenya
independence in 1963, and a year later became the country’s first president.
Kenyatta’s name is not the origin of the state’s name.
This goes back to the native term for the belt.
