The first coins without a portrait of the monarch

Although Mauritius did not become a republic until 1992,

already on the coins of this 1987 rupee series

for the first time, the first prime minister of the country was depicted instead of the monarch.

His portrait is depicted on the reverses of the entire set of coins.

Ramgulam led the country to independence from the United Kingdom in 1968.

The obverse depicts the denomination, the barasingha deer,

national coat of arms, palm trees, local man harvesting sugarcane,

and the central bank building.
