coins of the Namibian dollar.
The Kalahari Desert is one
from the most characteristic landscapes of Namibia
and habitat for many species of animals and plants.
Because of its importance, the Kalahari was considered
as a possible name for Namibia’s first currency
after gaining independence in 1990.
Also among the options was “Mark”.
Test coins were even minted
with the words “Independence” and also “Unabhängigkeit”
in English and German.
Finally, in 1993, the dollar was introduced
as the currency of Namibia.
This is the complete first set of coins.
The obverse features the national coat of arms,
and the reverse depicts the aloe mopane plant,
camel thorn tree, quiver tree,
butler bird and African eagle fish.
