In 1769 British explorer James Cook

arrived in New Zealand, laying the foundation

for later colonization.

At that time, the outlying islands were inhabited by people

Maori indigenous peoples, only about 500 years old.

This complete set of New Zealand dollar coins

dedicated to the culture and history of the country,

as well as original nature with some

of its many endemic species.

The obverse features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.

The reverse depicts a tuatara (reptile),

Maori koruru mask, wood carving among the koru patterns,

HMS Endeavor (Cook’s sailboat) in front of Taranaki volcano,

kiwi (flightless bird), silver fern leaves

and a great white heron.
