A set of coins from Nigeria, Africa’s largest economy.
After Herbert Macaulay (1864–1946)
already participated in the creation of the National Congress in 1920
and founded Nigeria’s first political party, the NNDP.
Three years later he became an important figure in the movement
for the independence of the then British colony
in the last years of his life.
He is now considered the founder of Nigerian nationalism
and immortalized, among other things, in this set of coins.
In addition to the portrait of Macaulay,
oil rigs are depicted on the reverses of the coins,
palm trees, corn cobs and
complex of buildings of the National Assembly of Nigeria.
The obverse features the national coat of arms.
with two white horses as a sign of dignity,
an eagle symbolizing strength,
and the major rivers of Nigeria, forming the Y.
