Coins of the ancient

independent Arab state

For centuries, the Strait of Hormuz has been the most

an important sea route between Europe and India, and

Oman’s coastal capital, Muscat, was the most

important port. Since 1746 the country has been ruled by

the Said dynasty, which also introduced

distinctive national emblem. It consists of two

crossed swords and the so-called khanjar – curved

dagger, which is still worn on holidays and

solemn occasions. National emblem

depicted on both sides of the coins of this set of rials.

The obverses also show the name of the former sultan.

Qaboos bin Said. The set was released for the 45th anniversary

anniversary of his accession to the throne in 1970.

The reverses have an appropriate commemorative text.
