East Timor – from buffalo horn crown to cockfighting.
The East Timor payment system is quite unique.
Alongside the banknotes of the official US-Dollar currency
the Banco Central de Timor-Leste has also been issuing its
own Centavo coins since 2003.
Motives are focused both on nature,
and on the culture of the island state:
from the traditional kaybauk headdress, in the form of buffalo horns,
and the nautilus, also called “living fossil”,
to the popular gambling sport of cockfighting.
The obverse depicts a nautilus, a rice plant,
fighting cock, traditional beiro boat
and coffee plant.
The reverse shows the denominations,
kaybauk and traditional tais pattern with stylized crocodiles.
