Yemen’s first set of coins since unification in 1990
Shahara village is located at an altitude of 2600 meters
on a rocky mountain and was an important stronghold during the conflict
with the Ottoman Empire in the 16th and 17th centuries.
Around the same period was built
impressive bridge, which is depicted on
reverse of a 10 rial coin from this set.
Also interesting is the endemic dragon blood tree on the 20 rial coin.
Its Arabic name is “Blood Brothers Tree”,
which refers to the story of Cain and Abel.
The other two coins feature the Yemeni national emblem.
