3 euro colored coin Austria 2022 – Microraptor
€25.00 includes 22% VAT
This is the tenth coin in the series. The Supersaurs series brings prehistoric giants back to life in the form of 12 gorgeous glow-in-the-dark coins.
Numerous well-preserved microraptor fossils have been found in lake bed deposits in the Chinese province of Liaoning. The dinosaur remains preserved in the mud were protected from oxygen and scavengers and thus provided paleontologists with a rare and fascinating glimpse into prehistoric life. Even the dinosaur’s feathers were clearly visible, fringing around the skull along the neck before merging into long wing feathers. The elongated tail also ended in a fan of feathers, two of which were especially long. The Microraptor is also one of the few dinosaurs in which feather color can be determined. Although it was not a bird, the microraptor nonetheless provides important evidence for an evolutionary link between birds and early dinosaurs.
On the right side of the reverse of the coin, a colored microraptor is depicted in a forest landscape clinging to a tree trunk; on the left, a flying microraptor is chasing a dragonfly.
The obverse of the coin depicts the silhouettes of all 12 prehistoric animals from the “Supersaurs” series.
