Charles III is the reigning king of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the Commonwealth realms. The longest in the history of Britain was the heir to the throne (in 1952-2022) and the Prince of Wales (in 1958-2022). He succeeded to the throne on September 8, 2022 at the age of 73, becoming the oldest king of Britain at the time of the beginning of the reign. His coronation took place on May 6, 2023. The coronation of His Majesty King Charles III was the first coronation of a Canadian head of state in more than seven decades, and for many Canadians it was their first look at a ceremony that symbolizes continuity, tradition and duty.
