“Girl Blowing a Whistle” is a painting painted in 1794. Kitagawa Utamaro created this woodcut. This work is part of the “Ten Classes of Female Physiognomy” series created between 1753 and 1806, in which Utamaro emphasizes the various personality traits of his models. It is part of ukiyo-e, or “floating world painting,” a Japanese art movement that spanned the 17th to 19th centuries. It depicts the life of models in major Japanese cities, teahouses, brothels and theaters.
