After joining the European Union in 2013, Croatia considered the introduction of the euro.
Finally, on June 1, 2022, the European Commission approved the entry of Croatia into the eurozone, which was confirmed on June 24, 2022 at the EU summit in Brussels.
The new currency will come into effect on January 1, 2023.
The ratio between the euro and the Croatian kuna is 7.5345 kunas per 1 euro.
The 2 euro coin depicts a map of Croatia and words about freedom from Ivan Gundulić’s famous work Dubravka. The 1 euro coin depicts a marten on the background of a chessboard. Nikola Tesla is depicted on the 50, 20 and 10 cent coins. On coins of 5, 2 and 1 cents, the image of the Glagolitic alphabet is presented.
