In 2025, the Paris Mint presents two inseparable portraits by Rembrandt, jointly acquired in 2016 by the Louvre and the Rijksmuseum. This is an opportunity to bring them together in one frame in honor of their return to the Paris museum galleries for the next five years.
The coin features Paired portraits of Maerten Soolmans and Oopjen Coppit.
Painted in 1634, these two life-size portraits are among the greatest works of Rembrandt, one of the masters of Dutch painting. They testify to the union of Maerten Soolmans and Oopjen Coppit. Two figures are in dialog: a young man, confident in himself and his place in a public building, greets his wife, heiress to one of the wealthy families of the economic capital of the United Provinces, while at the same time pointing at her.
These are the only known life-size portraits painted by Rembrandt, in a style then reserved for the highest European nobility; they probably reflect the couple’s desire to assert their social status. Although the portraits were painted separately, they are fortunate that they have never been separated since the seventeenth century. According to an agreement between France and the Netherlands, they must always be exhibited together.
