The coin is dedicated to one of the most famous artists in the world, Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio. His painting The Beheading of St John the Baptist, painted in oil on canvas in 1608 in Malta, is considered one of the most important works in Western painting and one of the ten greatest works of art of all time. The painting was commissioned by the Knights of Malta as an altarpiece and still hangs in the Cathedral of Saint John, for which it was commissioned and where Caravaggio himself served as a knight.
