Estonia first took part in the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp. In 1940, Estonia was annexed to the Soviet Union, and Estonian athletes from 1952 to 1988 competed for the USSR team at the Olympic Games.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union and Estonia’s proclamation of independence in 1991, an independent Estonian team began to compete at the Olympic Games again.
During their performance at the Olympic Games as an independent team, Estonian athletes won 41 Olympic medals: 13 gold, 11 silver and 17 bronze.
