The Australian Lunar Series coin series, first issued in 1996 and now in its third round, depicts 12 animals from the ancient lunar calendar. The annual drawings of the mouse, bull, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig are depicted in sequence according to the position they took in the Emperor’s Great Race. In fourth position was the rabbit, which is said to be endowed with intelligence, creativity, vigilance and compassion.
The coin depicts a rabbit jumping among the grasses. The design includes the Chinese character for ‘rabbit’, the inscription ‘RABBIT 2023’ and the Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mark.
