Gold coin 5 euro Latvia 2016 – Gold brooches: fibula “disc”
€310.00
The coin, repeating the fibula “disc” of the 3rd–4th centuries, is the first in a series of gold collectible euro coins dedicated to Latvian brooches and the country’s centenary. Brooches appeared in the jewelry sets of Latvian residents at a time when the territory of the Eastern Baltic and its inhabitants were first mentioned in written history.
Brooches were used to fasten and decorate clothing by everyone – men, women and children. The shape and ornament of the brooch also served as a talisman. The fibula disk, a unique find at the Dzelzava cemetery, is cast in bronze, like all brooches of that time. The brooch is made using openwork technique. The openwork on the surface of the disk forms a complex geometric pattern, symbolizing the sun and continuity.
