In 2015, the Central Bank of Malta issued a gold numismatic coin in memory of Pope John Paul II on the tenth anniversary of his passing.
The obverse of the coin features the coat of arms of Malta with the year of issue 2015. The reverse depicts a portrait of Pope John Paul II.
Karol Josef Wojtyla was born on May 18, 1920 in the Polish city of Wadowice. He was the youngest of three children of Karol Wojtyla and Emilia Kaczorowska. He was ordained a priest on November 1, 1946, was appointed Archbishop of Krakow in 1964, and became a cardinal in June 1967. On October 16, 1978, Cardinal Wojtyla was elected Pope. During his pontificate, John Paul II made 104 international apostolic journeys, canonized 1,338 people and canonized 482 saints. Pope John Paul II died on April 2, 2005 and was ordained a saint by Pope Francis on April 27, 2014.
