Paphos is a coastal city in southwestern Cyprus and the capital of the Paphos district. In ancient times, two places were called Paphos: Old Paphos, today Kouklia, and New Paphos.
The current city of Paphos lies on the Mediterranean coast, about 50 km west of Limassol, the largest port on the island. Paphos International Airport is the second largest airport in the country. The city has a subtropical Mediterranean climate with the mildest temperatures on the island.
Paphos is included in the official UNESCO list of cultural and natural world heritage treasures for its impressive ancient remains and was chosen as European Capital of Culture for 2017 along with Aarhus.
