Dzukija is a historical region in the south and southeast of Lithuania in the middle reaches of the Neman River. It was named in the 19th century from the peculiarity of the pronunciation of “dzukanya” of local residents. Dzukija is distinguished from other regions of Lithuania by its increased forest cover, as well as a high percentage of the Slavic population.
