Latvia consists of five historical regions of the Latvian people: Vidzeme, Latgale, Kurzeme, Zemgale, and Selija. Selija has been mentioned in historical sources as early as the 13th century, but it was only in 2021, with its official inclusion in the Law on Historical Regions of Latvia, that Selija was designated as a separate cultural and historical region. The flag and coat of arms of Selija were approved in 2023.
