The fourth coin in the series is dedicated to Leif Eriksson, an ancient Scandinavian explorer, presumably from Iceland, who charted a course to the shores of North America long before Columbus. According to the Icelandic sagas, he founded a Scandinavian settlement in Vinland, which is usually interpreted as coastal North America. According to Icelandic legends, Leif and his crew did not travel blindly, but based on eyewitness accounts of unknown lands on the horizon. Thus, in a sense, America was discovered even earlier than the year 1000. However, it was Leif who first made a full expedition along the shores of Vinland, gave it a name, landed on the coast, and even attempted to colonize it. The stories of Leif and his people, which formed the basis of the Scandinavian “Saga of Erik the Red” and “Saga of the Greenlanders”, were the basis for the first maps of Vinland.
