Set 2 euro Malta 2024 – Gozo Citadel + Bee (in capsules)
€42.00
The set consists of 2 coins of 2 euro denomination.
The first coin is dedicated to the Citadel of Gozo (Malta Walled Cities series).
Victoria Citadel on the island of Gozo has been inhabited since the Bronze Age. It is believed that the site where the Citadel now stands was the acropolis of the Punic-Roman city of Gaulos. During the Middle Ages, the acropolis was converted into a castle, which served as a refuge for the population of Gozo. Since 1998, the citadel has been included in the tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Malta.
The second coin is dedicated to the Maltese honey bee (native species series).
The Maltese honey bee is a subspecies of the western honey bee. There is a hypothesis that the island of Malta got its name due to the large number of bees: the name Μελίτη translates as “sweet honey”.
