The set consists of 2 coins of 2 euro denomination.
The first 2 euro coin is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the cononic coronation of the Virgin Mary as the patron saint of Andorra (September 8, 1921). Our Lady of Meritchell (in Catalan: Nostra Senyora de Meritxell) – was officially declared the patroness of Andorra back in 1873, and on September 8, 1921, the solemn coronation of the image of the Virgin of Mericell took place in accordance with all the canons of the Catholic Church and since then this day is celebrated as a national holiday of Andorra.
The image shown on the coin corresponds to the carving of the Mother of God located in the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Merichel. This multicolored carved statue is a copy of a Romanesque original destroyed in a fire in 1972. The image of Our Lady of Merichel, restored from photographs, is the main decoration of the current church. The image that is now revered is a faithful reproduction of the Romanesque style, which was considered one of the oldest examples, and its date of creation was between the 11th and 12th centuries.
The second coin is dedicated to caring for the elderly. The obverse depicts the hands of a young and elderly person, above them the inscription of the issuing country and several reproductions of the SARS-COV2 virus. The coin also reads “CUIDEM LA NOSTRA CENT GRAM” (We take care of our seniors) and the year of issue is “2021”.
