In 2021, the Paris Mint opens a new series based on literary styles and authors who have contributed to the history of literature in France and abroad.
William Shakespeare (1564-1616) – English poet and playwright, considered the greatest writer in the English language and one of the best playwrights in the world. Often referred to as the national poet of England. Shakespeare’s plays have been translated into every major language and are performed more frequently than the works of other playwrights. The works of Shakespeare seriously influenced the theater and literature of the following years. In particular, he expanded the scope of the playwright’s work with characterization, plot, language, and genre. In Shakespeare’s time, English grammar, spelling, and pronunciation were less standardized than they are today, and his language helped shape modern English. He wrote famous works “Romeo and Juliet”, “Hamlet”, “King Lear” and many others.
The reverse side is common for the entire series “The Art of the Pen”. It is inscribed with several symbolic quotations such as “Le mieux est l’ennemi du bien” by Voltaire, “Lasciate ogne speranza voi ch’intrate” by Dante Alighieri, “To be or not to be: that is the question” by William Shakespeare, or ” Was micht umbringt, macht mich starker” Nietzsche. A feather is engraved in the center of the coin and under the name of the series. The abbreviation of the French Republic “RF” is engraved in the lower right corner of the coin, as well as the distinctive mark of the design author Joaquin Jimenez.
