In Estonian culture, the eight-pointed star is considered a symbol of the unity of Heaven and Earth: its clockwise rotation enhances vital energy, while its counterclockwise rotation enhances creativity. It is often used as a protective symbol and a symbol of spiritual healing. At the center of the star on the obverse of the coin is the coat of arms of Estonia; around it, clockwise, are depicted birds—the souls of ancestors, personifying Heaven, while counterclockwise, the daughters of the Mother of the Sword, associated with Earth.
Midsummer Night, celebrated on June 23, is one of the oldest Estonian holidays. According to legend, on this night, a rare fern flower can be found, which “blooms” for a moment and brings good luck, health, and wisdom. The reverse of the coin depicts this flower growing in the hollow of an ancient sacrificial stone.
