Silver coin 1$ Australia 2010 – Australian Antarctic Territory: Husky
€79.00 includes 22% VAT
Husky is a general term for several breeds of dogs ideally suited for pulling teams in cold snowy conditions. Native to the northern regions, huskies were brought to Antarctica by the British Antarctic Expedition of 1898-1900. Australia has kept huskies in Antarctica for nearly 40 years, starting in 1954 when Mawson Station was opened.
In 1991, Australia signed an environmental treaty that required the removal of introduced species from Antarctica. The last remaining huskies left the Australian Antarctic Territory in 1993, the older dogs retired to Australia and the young working dogs started a new life in the United States.
