The coin is the third issue in the “Coats of Arms of Australia” series.
Queensland is a state in the north-east of mainland Australia. The official nicknames are “Sunshine State” and “Smart State”. The first settlers of the region were Australian Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders, who arrived, according to various dating methods, 40-65 thousand years ago. The state got its name in honor of Queen Victoria, who signed the decree creating a new state on June 6, 1859, separating Queensland from New South Wales. Queen Victoria granted the Queensland Coat of Arms to the Colony of Queensland in 1893, making it the oldest state coat of arms in Australia. It depicts the major industries of 19th century Queensland with wheat, bull and ram heads, and a gold column rising from a quartz heap. Two stalks of sugarcane surround the state badge at the top, and at the bottom is the Queensland state motto: Audax at Fidelis, meaning “Bold but Faithful”. In 1977, Queen Elizabeth II provided the brolga and red deer as support animals.
