Gibraltar is a small British overseas territory located at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, bordering Spain to the north. Its currency is the Gibraltar pound, which is locally interchangeable with the pound sterling, to which it is pegged at par.
The Territory has also allowed certain mints to issue commemorative and bullion coins under its jurisdiction.
This coin is part of the Scottsdale Mint line of Gibraltar bullion coins and is the second issue in the Lady Justice series.
The figure of Lady Justice has been minted throughout world history, with one of the earliest examples appearing in the Roman Empire around 100 AD. The ideal of pure, impartial justice is timeless, and people have sought, discussed and fought to preserve this concept throughout mankind.
The reverse of the coin features a classic engraving of a blindfolded Lady Justice holding a sword in her right hand and a scale in her left.
The obverse of the coin features the Coat of Arms of the Government of Gibraltar in the center. It includes the Royal Arms of the United Kingdom, which is a quartered shield depicting in the first and fourth quarters the three guardian lions of England passing by; in the second, a rampant lion and a flory-counterflora of Scotland with a double treasure; and in the third, a harp for Ireland. The coat of arms depicts a guardian lion in the crown of St. Edward, and he himself is depicted in another image of this crown, standing on a knight’s helmet. The sinister (left) supporter is also a crowned English lion; Dexter (right), a Scottish unicorn.
