The coin is dedicated to one of the national symbols of New Zealand – the kiwi bird. The little spotted kiwi is the smallest of the kiwi species, at 25 cm tall and weighing just over a kilogram. Now this subspecies lives only on the isolated island of Kapiti, where it was moved for the purpose of conservation and protection. The little spotted kiwi is listed in the International Red Book with the status of Vulnerable .
