The story of Moses and the Rock is one of the most famous and mysterious of all biblical stories.
The merit of the prophetess Miriam, the sister of Moses, the sons of Israel accompanied the well during 40 years of their wanderings in the wilderness. However, when Miriam died, “Miriam’s Well”, as it came to be known, dried up and a water crisis ensued. Out of fear that they would die of thirst, the people complained bitterly to their leaders, Moses and his brother Aaron.
G-d commanded Moses to take his staff and, together with Aaron, gather the congregation and speak to the rock in the presence of the people so that it would give water. However, instead of speaking to the rock, as God commanded him, Moses struck the rock twice. For this, both he and Aaron were severely punished. After 40 years of complete selflessness and self-sacrifice in leading the people and all the hardships that they had endured together since the Exodus from Egypt, they were not destined to enter the Promised Land with the people. G-d tells them the reason for the punishment: hitting the rock and not talking to it, “… you did not believe in Me, to sanctify Me in the eyes of the children of Israel …”.
Thus the story ends tragically for Moses. A year before his death, in the 40th year of his leadership, he accused the people: “And God was angry with me because of you, saying: You will not enter there either.” Neither Moses nor Aaron could have received their reward and enjoyed the fulfillment of their dream by entering the Land of Israel with the children of Israel.
