On February 19, the Bank of Estonia issued a silver collector’s coin dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the birth of Admiral Johan Pitka. Pitka was a sea captain and rear admiral, he founded the Defense League, the Border Guard and the Estonian Navy. He played a key role in the War of Independence as commander of the Estonian naval forces.
The coin depicts a portrait of Johan Pitka, the years of his life from 1872 to 1944, as well as a fragment of a blue-black-and-white flag.
Johan Pitka was born on February 19, 1872 in Järva County and grew up in a family in which the spirit of national awakening breathed. He went to sea at an early age and trained as a deep sea captain. When the War of Independence began, he organized the Estonian armed forces and created the Defense League. Pitka’s people were among those who, on February 24, 1918, overthrew the Bolsheviks from power in Tallinn and elsewhere and proclaimed an independent Republic of Estonia. Pitka embodied the spirit of the War of Independence, leading the navy and helping to create the armored trains that became the shock units of the Estonian armed forces. He lived in Canada for some time after the war before returning to Estonia, where he sat in the National Constituent Assembly. Johan Pitka died in 1944, and the exact circumstances of his death and his final resting place are unknown.
