Spider-Man is a superhero appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. He first appeared in Amazing Fantasy #15 (August 1962). The authors conceived the character as an orphan teenager, raised by his uncle and aunt, combining the life of an ordinary student and a crime fighter. Spider-Man gained super strength, increased agility, a “spider sense,” as well as the ability to stay on steep surfaces and shoot webs from his hands using a device of his own invention. Before Spider-Man appeared in the 1960s, teenagers in superhero comics were usually just their sidekicks. The Spider-Man comics broke these stereotypes by presenting the hero as a teenager who lacked an experienced mentor.
Spider-Man is one of the most popular and commercially successful superheroes. Since 1962, hundreds of millions of comic books featuring the character have been sold worldwide. As his popularity increased, Spider-Man expanded beyond the comics and began appearing on television, video games and films.
