Sergei Vasilyevich Rachmaninov (1873–1943) is a pianist and composer who has become a symbol of Russian music throughout the world.

He graduated from the Moscow Conservatory as a pianist and composer, having received the Big Gold Medal for his thesis work – the one-act opera Aleko. Tchaikovsky, who took the exam from the young composer, gave the opera a mark of “five plus three” and recommended it for staging at the Bolshoi Theatre.

In the last years of his life, Rachmaninoff created Symphonic Dances, which music scholars consider one of his best works.
