Belgenland was a transatlantic steamship of the Belgian-American shipping company Red Star Line, launched under that name in 1914 and first commissioned as Belgic in 1917. Designed as a luxury liner for passenger service, in the aftermath of the First World War, she was used first as a cargo ship, and then as a military transport with a completely changed appearance, operated by the White Star Line. For some time immediately after the war, she also served as a passenger ship, but exclusively for class III travelers. Only after Red Star Line took over the ship permanently, which was not possible until 1923, and renamed her Belgenland again, could the ship be used as a luxury liner on transatlantic voyages, and later increasingly for cruises and circumnavigations. She remained in service until 1936 and was originally one of the largest ships of her time. Because it was so different from the Belgic and Belgenland respectively, it was also called the “two-faced ship”.
The luxury cruise ship operated on the Red Star Line from 1923 to 1934. To the left of the star is the Antwerp skyline, and to the right is the New York skyline.
The reverse depicts the porter of King Philip of Belgium.
