Eric the Red is a Scandinavian navigator and discoverer who founded the first settlement in Greenland. He received the nickname “red” for the color of his hair and beard. Father of Leif and Thorvald Erikson, pre-Columbian discoverers of America. According to the sagas, Eric the Red sailed from Iceland with 30 ships, of which only 14 with 350 settlers reached Greenland, and founded the first European settlement on the island.
